Paksane road village 3

This was another refugee village. The inhabitants here were mixed: some Hmong, some lao teung, even some Vietnamese. There are two photos of a rather serious Vietnamese girl, and I printed one of them for an exhibition/photo contest at the American High School in Vientiane. It marked my first attempt in the darkroom and won second prize, The first prize was won by John Everingham, who later became a professional photographer contributing to National Geographic. He also got himself captured by the Pathet Lao for a few days, swam the Mekong to rescue his girlfriend after the PL takeover, and kindly loaned me and David Pepper his ‘big’ (250cc) bike for a trip up to Vang Vieng.
